Love’s Labours Lost

To me, the world of Love’s Labours Lost is one where the aspirations of refinement and higher learning mingle with the mischief and whimsy of youth. Director Paul Barnes’ vision of an Oxford/Cambridge setting inspired us to create a playful ensemble full of movement and color. Our goal was to immerse the audience in the late 1910-era academic playground of Navarre. The text of this play is full of delightful witticisms, and it was important to us as a design team to dress the characters in a way that would be accessible and clear in support of the story. This meant delineating relationships with color, incorporating recognizable uniform elements as shorthand for societal status, and emphasizing comedic details.
