The Tempest

Arkansas Shakespeare Theater, 2023

The Tempest has been a longtime favorite of mine, so I was very excited to re enter its world of magic and mystery. The natural power and roughness of the storm was a major source of inspiration for our director and myself. We as a creative team were drawn to the encrusted shipwrecks and overgrown shores of deserted Mediterranean isles, and so we designed a world where magic and nature are deeply intertwined. To me, the island represents Prospero's inability to let go of his grudges and move past the trauma he had endured. Miranda, Caliban, and Ariel are all held captive in one way or another because of Prospero's need for control and revenge. My designs take inspiration from the natural landscape of the island itself to physically manifest the ways that dwelling in their trauma and grief has affected the characters over time.
