Songs For A New World
The University of Arkansas’ unconventional adaptation of Jason Robert Brown’s Songs For A New World brought movement and specificity to this collection of beautiful musical stories. On this production, I conducted extensive dramaturgical research on the details of each narrative song. This inspired the creative team to present this musical as a glimpse into the lives of people across history as they confront important moments of decision in their lives. Together, we fleshed out the specific story of each song and costumed the principal performers to the period and situation. Many numbers were supported by the ensemble, providing harmonies and movement in contemporary attire. Through this choice, the audience is invited to empathize across time and space, and to envision the New World they might one day create for themselves.
